What is organic Cotton? Organic cotton is cotton that is grown without pesticides or harmful fertilizers.
Very high levels of chemicals are used in the production of non-organic cotton. Cotton production uses more chemicals per unit area than any other crop and accounts in total for 30% of the world's pesticides. The chemicals used in the processing of cotton also pollute our air and harm surface waters. Residual chemicals found in the fabrics we wear may also irritate consumers' skin.
Organic cotton growing uses crop rotation instead of chemicals and artificial fertilizers, and biological pest control instead of pesticides. Organic cotton has less environmental impact than conventional cotton, but it costs much more to produce.
